Born in 1991, Zala Opara graduated from Falmouth University, UK, where she earned an BA in Film. One of four scholarships for studying arts abroad was awarded to her by the Slovenian Ministry of Culture. Most recently she studied Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology with focus on visual anthropology at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana and at Universita Autonoma de Barcelona.
After producing several awarded shorts at university, she took part in the screening of The Roaring (2015) by Amy Thompson in Bafta. She also collaborated in several narrow-budget films in the UK, Brazil, Netherlands and Slovenia.
Early in her carrier, she became assistant producer to Danijel Hočevar at Vertigo, Ljubljana. She is now producer at Vertigo.
She produced the 2nd season of a TV miniseries about Slovenian literature titled 50 knjig, ki so nas napisale/50 books that wrote us (2020) by publishers Luka and Valentina Novak and directed by Urša Menart. She is now overlooking the development of three new features in Vertigo production. Urša Menart’s Vse, kar je narobe s tabo/Everything that’s wrong with you, film by Damjan Kozole Deževno poletje/Rainy Summer and debute by Irena Gatej, Odtisi/Prints.
She has attended numerous workshops, including: Talents Sarajevo 2020, When East Meets West workshop (2018, 2019), ReAct workshops (2017, 2018), BFI London (2016, 2017) and workshops at the Festival of Slovenian Film (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019). She has taught film art to underprivileged kids in London and is now a guest lecturer at workshops organised by University of Sežana.
Zala is a member of DAVP – Društvo Avdiovizualnih Producentov/Association of Audio-Visual Producers of Slovenia.
